Jinjiang falls under the jurisdiction of Quanzhou, a beautiful port city that was once one of the premier ports for international trade. For that reason, the area has been home to many immigrants over the centuries and is still very ethnically diverse. The area has seen immense economic growth in the last ten years.

According to Jane Liedtke (of Our Chinese Daughters Foundation), Jinjiang City is nicknamed the "sneaker capital of the world" because it is home to 3,000 sneaker manufacturers. Nike first set contracts for sneakers here in 1983. A shoe that sells for $200 in the U.S. costs about 150 RMB (about $18) to make in Jinjiang. The majority of the sneakers made in Jinjiang are not for export, however, and most are sold inside China.
