Orphanage informationThe Jian'ou orphanage was established in 1949 and is a small one by Chinese standards. It usually has anywhere between 20 and 30 children at one time. Many, but definitely not all, of the children are considered special needs. The social welfare institute building consists of five floors. Elderly residents live on the lower three floors and the orphanage rooms are on the fourth and fifth floors. When one adopts from Jian'ou SWI, the children are brought to Fuzhou either by train or car. It appears that no one has gone to Jian'ou City to meet their child. It is about 150 miles from Fuzhou and considered to be too far and too hard a trip for people to have to travel there.
